Shilajit is one of the least standardised supplements you can buy. Two jars can sit side by side at the same price and contain completely different things: one a sun-dried resin from 17,000 ft with a published lab report, the other a low-altitude paste cut with filler and never tested for heavy metals. Nothing on the label tells you which is which.
This guide is the checklist we use ourselves. Work through the five points below and you can judge any shilajit on the market in about two minutes.
1. Where it was harvested
Altitude matters because it changes what ends up in the material. Shilajit forms over centuries as plant matter compresses between rocks, and the highest-altitude deposits — above roughly 16,000 ft in the Himalayas, Altai and Karakoram — sit far from farmland, roads and industry. Lower-altitude and roadside deposits pick up what is around them, which is one of the main reasons heavy metals show up in cheap shilajit.
A brand that knows its supply chain will name the altitude and the region. A brand that says only "Himalayan" is telling you nothing — the Himalayas span five countries and 1,500 miles.
2. A published certificate of analysis
This is the single most important check, and the fastest.
Ask for the COA — the third-party lab report for the batch you are about to buy. It should show tests for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, plus microbes and mycotoxins, and it should come from a lab in the country where the product is sold, not from the supplier who sold the raw material.
Two failure modes to watch for. First, "lab tested" with no document: a claim, not evidence. Second, a COA that only lists fulvic acid content and skips the contaminant panel entirely — the test that costs money is the one being avoided.
If a brand cannot show you a current COA in under a minute, that is your answer.
3. Fulvic acid percentage
Fulvic acid is the compound most of shilajit's researched activity is attributed to, and it is the number most often fudged. Genuine gold-grade resin typically tests in the 60–80% range for combined fulvic and humic acid. Anything advertised at 10–20% is either heavily diluted or measured by a different method, and anything claiming 90%+ is almost certainly not shilajit at all.
Watch the units too. "500 mg of shilajit" and "500 mg of fulvic acid" are very different products, and the ambiguity is usually deliberate.
4. How it was purified and dried
Raw shilajit comes out of the rock mixed with soil and plant debris, so every product has been processed somehow. The traditional method is filtration through water followed by slow sun-drying over several weeks, which removes moisture without cooking off the bioactive compounds. Heat-drying is faster and cheaper and degrades them.
Ask how long the drying took. Brands doing it properly will tell you, because it is expensive and they want credit for it.
5. The form you will actually take
The best shilajit is the one you take every day, and this is where most people quietly fail. Resin is the traditional form and the most potent by weight, but it is sticky, bitter, and needs dissolving in warm water each morning. Capsules and powders solve the mess and usually reintroduce the dosing problem — many are underdosed, and capsule fillers are where cheap material hides. Gummies almost always trade potency for sugar.

There is no wrong answer here — only the honest one about whether you will still be doing it in six weeks. If you have bought resin before and it is still sitting half-used in a cupboard, that is useful information about which form is right for you.
Red flags worth walking away from
- No COA, or a COA older than the batch you are buying. Purity is a per-batch property.
- Disease claims. Any supplement promising to cure, treat or prevent a condition is breaking the rules, which tells you how it handles the rules you cannot see.
- No altitude or region named.
- Dissolves cloudy or leaves grit. Real resin dissolves into a dark, clear amber-brown; sediment is filler.
- Bargain pricing. High-altitude harvesting, weeks of sun-drying and third-party testing all cost money. A jar well under market is telling you which of those was skipped.
How to take it
Start with 300–500 mg once a day — resin dissolved in warm (not boiling) water, tea or milk, or one shot. Morning on an empty stomach is the traditional timing and the easiest to stay consistent with.
Give it time. People often report a difference in energy within the first week or two, while mineral-related effects build over roughly 4–6 weeks of daily use. Consistency does more than dose size.
